The Doctor of Psychology in Counselling Psychology programme (PsyD-CoP) at Hong Kong Shue Yan University is the first doctoral degree in Counselling Psychology in Asia. The PsyD-CoP programme intends to produce future leading counselling psychologists who possess the necessary core competencies of Counselling Psychology, as benchmarked with professional standards of related local and overseas professional bodies. Specifically, the programme facilitates students’ accumulation of knowledge, skills, and clinical experience for professional recognition from the Hong Kong Psychological Society (HKPS) and its Division of Counselling Psychology (DCoP).
The PsyD-CoP programme adopts a scientist-practitioner training model in three dimensions: knowledge, research, and practice. Students are provided with ample professional opportunities to integrate theory and practice of counselling psychology. The small teacher-student ratio and supervision-based approach promote a collaborative learning atmosphere for students to engage in intellectual and scholarly dialogues with instructors. Students work closely with course instructors, thesis supervisors, and clinical supervisors to meet their learning needs and to enhance their professional training experience in the programme.

The PsyD-CoP programme aims at producing competent counselling psychologists who can assume leadership positions within the professional psychology community locally and internationally. The competent doctoral-level counselling psychologist in this context is one who can:
1. Perform advanced level of multicultural and ethical competence in psychotherapy, assessment, and research;
2. Minister to the short- and long-term mental health needs of the Hong Kong population;
3. Contribute to the development of counselling psychology in Hong Kong through continuous engagement in clinically-based research;
4. Support the fostering of future counselling psychologists through provision of clinical supervision and professional training; and
5. Assume major leadership roles in the profession of counselling psychology in Hong Kong and nearby regions.
