The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) prides itself on its General Education (GE) programme, which consists of the GE Foundation Programme, the Four Areas, and College GE. These constituents of the GE programme combine to broaden students' intellectual horizons and cultivate habits of mind that are central to intellectual reasoning, so that students can better understand the world and actively contribute to it when they enter the workplace. GE at CUHK is committed to whole-person development, aiming to nurture students in values, attitudes and skills needed for collaboration, service, lifelong learning and leadership in the community.

The Office of University General Education (OUGE) administers the GE Foundation Programme and coordinates the offering of University GE electives. It provides key support for the quality assurance of the overall GE provision of the University. A subunit of OUGE, the GE China Programme, established in 2022, offers two China courses, "Understanding China" and "Hong Kong in the Wider Constitutional Order", which are part of the University Core Requirements aiming to help students understand various aspects of the contemporary development of China. As part of the CUHK Strategic Plan 2026-2030, the University will further strengthen China Education as a major component of its core curriculum. The Associate Director will play a pivotal leadership role in shaping the quality and future direction of the GE China Programme.

We are inviting applications for the post of Associate Director (China Programme) of OUGE, who will assist the Director of OUGE in overseeing the planning, implementation and development of the China courses. The appointee is expected to provide strong academic and administrative leadership to ensure that the delivery of these courses will be of a high educational standard.

The appointee will (a) provide strategic leadership for the development and enhancement of the GE China Programme, ensuring its alignment with the University's vision and mission; (b) work closely with Colleges, Faculties, and Departments to facilitate the effective delivery of the GE China courses; (c) supervise and mentor a team of lecturers, teaching assistants, research and administrative staff to ensure that the teaching content and activities are up-to-date and meet standards of academic rigor; (d) establish assessment measures to evaluate student learning outcomes and improve course design; (e) promote academic exchanges with universities in the Chinese Mainland with a view to keeping abreast of current developments of the nation; and (f) lead pedagogical innovation, including the responsible application of generative AI and emerging educational technologies, to enhance student learning and engagement.

Applicants should have (i) a Doctoral degree in Humanities or Social Sciences, with a strong academic and research track record in China studies; (ii) first-hand knowledge of China from conducting teaching and research in the field; (iii) in-depth knowledge of contemporary China's development, governance, society, economy, culture, and modernization challenges; (iv) at least twelve years of post-qualification relevant experience in academic administration; and (v) a commitment to quality education and intellectual excellence.

Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for up to three years, renewable subject to mutual agreement. The University reserves the right to fill the post by invitation / nomination.
