Our research postgraduate programme is founded on the recognition of creative practice as a rigorous mode of inquiry and knowledge production. With a particular focus on practice-led and practice-based research in the visual arts, the programme is designed for candidates whose work engages artistic practice as a means of original investigation, advancing knowledge and making a significant contribution to the field.

The programme is structured around studio-based practice within a rigorous research environment, positioning creative inquiry as a method for producing original knowledge. Through tutorials, seminars, and lectures, candidates critically engage conceptual, philosophical, material, and theoretical frameworks, and situate their work within contemporary critical and artistic discourse. Practice is undertaken as a mode of investigation through which research questions are explored and original insights are developed.

Practice-led research examines the nature, processes, and conditions of practice itself. It advances understanding within the discipline by generating knowledge about practice and its methods of inquiry. In this form of research, practice constitutes the central site of investigation and is integral to the research and to its original contribution to knowledge.

Practice-based research is an original investigation in which creative practice is both a means of inquiry and a site of research outcomes. Knowledge is generated through the process of practice and through the outcomes it produces, with those outcomes forming an integral part of the research as a whole and of its contribution to knowledge.
