Assistant Secretary (carrying the job title of 'Head of Social and Climate Action') (Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Office)

The Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Office of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is set up to advise senior management on key areas of University Social Responsibility (USR). One of its core functions is to execute, evaluate and enhance the USR action plans outlined in the University's Strategic Plan 2021-2025. The Office engages university members across units and coordinates their efforts in realizing CUHK's USR goals that are in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the achievement of carbon neutrality by 2038. To maximize the impact of the University's USR initiatives for sustainable development, the Office endeavours to develop and maintain strategic partnerships with local and overseas institutions. The Office also operates the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (MoCC) and the secretariat of the Hong Kong Chapter of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

The appointee will (a) assume responsibility for developing and overseeing initiatives with a positive social and climate impact in accordance with CUHK's strategic plan; (b) perform the role of executive director of the MoCC and oversee the museum's operations, deliverables and scientific solutions in all formats; (c) solicit development opportunities, including new partners, projects and funding; (d) coordinate with internal units and network with external stakeholder groups in USR and climate action initiatives; and (e) perform other duties as assigned.

Applicants should have (i) a postgraduate degree, preferably a doctorate, in a related discipline; (ii) at least twelve years' post-degree experience, preferably including supervisory responsibilities in the public sector; (iii) an excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua); (iv) strong research and analytical skills; (v) exceptional interpersonal skills, including effective listening, collaborating, negotiating, persuading and influencing; and (vi) demonstrated ability to initiate, develop and monitor projects in the education, museum or cultural institution setting. Experience in museum management, as well as knowledge of the SDGs and how institutions of higher education operate will be advantageous.

Appointment will initially be made on a contract basis for up to three years, renewable subject to mutual agreement. Review of applications will commence in June 2024 and continue until the position is filled. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a written test.
