The MPhil/PhD Programme is designed to train scholars or researchers who are solidly grounded in theoretical perspectives, highly original and specialized in their chosen fields, yet knowledgeable in a broader interdisciplinary network of knowledges. The MPhil/PhD aims to equip scholars or researchers with advanced knowledge and skills in a specialist field, enabling them to undertake roles requiring specialist expertise relating to the pursuit and application of knowledge, and to make a significant impact in their chosen area of expertise.

A unique feature of these programmes is the interdisciplinary approach. All students will be required to enrol in a course focused on interdisciplinary approaches to the creation of new knowledge. Students will explore possible intersections between different disciplines. The rationale for introducing the interdisciplinary approach is to attune the programme to the network culture of the 21st century; and to produce graduates who are not only highly knowledgeable in their area of expertise but also capable of making connections with other related fields.

The MPhil/PhD Programme in English provides: vigorous training in cutting-edge literary and critical cultural theories; solid foundation in literary and cultural theories; knowledge in Anglo-American literature; and exposure to cultural texts.

The programme has expertise in the following areas: Interdisciplinary and Intercultural Studies, Technoscience Culture, Ecology and Environmental Ethics, Science Fiction Studies, Anglo-American Literature, Deleuzian Studies, Gender Studies, Feminism, Literary Studies, Second Language Acquisition, Phonetics and Phonology, Sociolinguistics, Language Contact and Multilingualism, Discourse Analysis, Translation Studies, Gender-based Translation Studies. We put a special emphasis on Interdisciplinary Studies and welcome thesis that deals with intersections of two or more of the above areas.
